Emily Sanders is a Licensed Professional Counselor and therapist at Brickel and Associates, LLC, in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
Emily believes strongly in healing and recovery for all individuals, couples, and families struggling with mental health and relational issues. In recognizing that each individual or couple has different needs, she utilizes an eclectic approach to providing therapy in order to meet the unique needs of each client, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT), art and expressive therapy techniques, and an overall interpersonal process. She approaches therapy with hope, compassion, and creativity to empower clients to access their personal strengths.
She has vast experience working with clients using eating disordered and self-harming behaviors as they attempt to manage their trauma. In her work with couples, Emily works collaboratively with clients to cultivate authentic connection, strengthen trust, and improve healthy and effective communication strategies. In addition, Emily also has a strong background and experience in working with clients in the LGBTQ+ community, and in treating postpartum depression and anxiety. Emily has worked in various levels of therapeutic care, including residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient.
Through creating a safe and secure therapeutic relationship, Emily supports clients in creating meaningful and lasting change to overcome trauma, addiction, eating disorder behaviors, self-harm, anxiety and mood disorders, and perinatal mental health disorders. She is invested in participating in ongoing professional education and training, and has recently completed advanced clinical training in issues related to maternal mental health and is pursuing certification in the specialized treatment of trauma.
