Esther Howe is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Virginia and a psychotherapist at Brickel and Associates, LLC in Old Town, Alexandria, VA.
Esther works from a strengths based, holistic model of psychotherapy. She knows that clients are the experts of their own lives and seeks, through therapy, to draw on those innate strengths. Further, she helps clients recognize the mind-body connection and thus explore how psychological issues can create somatic symptoms. Clients also learn how physical illness can affect their mood states.
Esther has worked in three states as a clinical social worker. She started her career working with adolescents in residential treatment centers and then founded school-based clinics in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. For the past twenty years Esther has been a professor of social work, all the while maintaining a small private practice and providing clinical supervision for other therapists.
Aware that substance abuse often plays a significant role in clients’ lives, Esther helps clients explore the function substances play in their lives. Based on a harm reduction model, she helps clients develop less detrimental coping mechanisms. Further, Esther enjoys working with couples and helping them recalibrate their relationships to establish a more satisfying balance. She encourages them to master skills they can avail themselves of even after formal therapy has ended.
In the past four years she has begun clinical work with veterans and their families. This has allowed her to focus on trauma informed practice. Esther recognizes the enormous effects early adverse experiences have on adult functioning. She continues further training in trauma-informed therapy.
