Family Therapy

Trauma-Informed Family Systems Care

Family therapy at Brickel and Associates is rooted in a relational, family systems and trauma-informed framework. We understand that distress often exists within relational contexts, and meaningful change happens when the system is supported as a whole.

We work with families of older adolescents and adults navigating traumatic events and responses, life transitions, survival strategies, conflict, parenting challenges, and adolescent mental health concerns.

By considering how family and relationship dynamics, attachment patterns, and relational histories influence emotional well-being, we offer care that supports both individual growth and healthier family interactions.

Trauma-Informed Family Systems Care

Our approach recognizes how trauma, stress, and attachment patterns can move through family systems across generations. Family therapy may address:

  • Improving communication and emotional safety
  • Supporting adolescents through anxiety, depression, or trauma
  • Repairing relational ruptures
  • Navigating transitions, grief, or crisis
  • Strengthening attachment and regulation within the family

We strive to create sessions that feel balanced, respectful, and supportive of all voices.

Supporting Adolescents Through a Family Lens

Even when adolescents engage in individual therapy, we view their experiences within the broader family system. Family involvement—when appropriate—can help caregivers better understand their teen’s nervous system, emotional needs, and coping strategies.

Our goal is not to place blame, but to build insight, compassion, and more effective ways of relating.

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Family Therapy

We support families of LGBTQIA+ adolescents and adults who are seeking greater understanding, connection, and repair. This may include:

  • Helping caregivers support an LGBTQIA+ child or teen
  • Navigating coming out and identity development
  • Addressing family conflict rooted in misunderstanding or fear
  • Strengthening acceptance and safety within the family

We approach this work with care, cultural humility, and a commitment to affirming identity while supporting relational healing.
