Relationships

We help clients better understand and navigate relational challenges, strengthen communication, and build healthy, secure connections.

At Brickel & Associates, we understand that relationships are central to our emotional well-being. From couples to families, friendships, and work dynamics, the quality of our connections deeply impacts our sense of safety, belonging, and fulfillment. Our work is grounded in a trauma-informed approach, recognizing that past experiences—especially those involving attachment, neglect, or trauma—can shape how we relate to others in the present.

What is a Relationship?

A relationship is more than just a connection between two or more people—it is an ongoing system of emotional, psychological, and social interactions that shapes how we experience safety, trust, and intimacy. Relationships exist in many forms: romantic partnerships, families, friendships, work connections, and even the ways we relate to ourselves. Every relationship carries the potential to nurture, challenge, and grow us, and understanding these dynamics is essential to living a connected and fulfilling life.

Trauma-Informed Relationship Work

Safety is the foundation of all relational healing. Whether working with couples, families, or individuals, we prioritize creating an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected. This safe space allows for authentic exploration of patterns, triggers, and challenges without judgment. By approaching relationships through a trauma-informed lens, we help clients recognize how past experiences influence current interactions, communication, and emotional responsiveness.

Couples and Family Dynamics

Our practice draws from multiple evidence-based, relational, and systems-oriented modalities to address relational challenges and strengthen connection:

  • Imago Therapy – Helps couples explore unconscious relational patterns, fostering empathy, understanding, and effective communication.
  • Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT) – Focuses on attachment and arousal regulation to help couples repair and maintain secure connections.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) – Supports couples in identifying and reshaping negative interaction cycles, deepening emotional responsiveness and trust.
  • Developmental Couple Therapy for Complex Trauma – Provides tools for couples navigating the long-term impact of trauma on attachment, intimacy, and relational patterns.
  • CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) – A model designed for families with loved ones struggling with substance use who may not yet be ready for treatment, helping families communicate effectively, support behavior change, and protect their own well-being. These approaches help:

  • Build secure, trusting connections
  • Repair attachment ruptures
  • Understand unconscious relational patterns
  • Improve emotional attunement and communication

By examining family dynamics, work relationships, and social interactions through a systems lens, we help clients see how each relationship is interconnected and how changing patterns in one area can positively impact others.

Individual Relationship Support

Even when clients attend therapy individually, we focus on helping them navigate relationships effectively. We work to:

  • Identify personal patterns that affect relationships
  • Increase emotional regulation and resilience
  • Develop skills for setting boundaries and expressing needs
  • Foster secure attachment in current and future relationships

This individual work often strengthens the capacity for healthier connections with partners, family members, colleagues, and friends.

A Relational, Attachment-Focused Lens

Our approach emphasizes attachment theory as a guide to understanding how early relationships shape adult relational styles. By identifying attachment patterns—secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized—we help clients develop awareness and tools to foster secure, supportive, and fulfilling connections.

Why Relationships Matter

Strong, healthy relationships are not just desirable—they are essential for emotional health. When we feel connected, understood, and supported:

  • Our nervous system regulates more easily
  • We cope better with stress and challenges
  • We experience greater satisfaction and fulfillment in life

Our work is designed to help clients experience this kind of relational safety and growth, whether in their most intimate relationships, their family systems, or broader social and professional connections.

At Brickel & Associates, we support clients in creating the relationships they want—grounded in safety, attunement, and connection.
